Five Year Old Class

Mustard Seed follows a Christian Classical model of education designed to give children a strong foundation in all subject areas. All children in our 5 year old PreK program participate in the following curriculum areas: Children’s Catechism (Devotions), Discovery, El Pueblo, Language Arts, Math, Music, Art, and Spanish. In addition to learning the basic building blocks for each subject area, all curriculum is designed to strengthen gross and fine motor development, listening and following directions, and social-emotional skills.

All of our PreK classes prepare a child for Kindergarten. We refer to the Williamson County and Franklin Special School District Kindergarten Readiness scales. Please note that children in our 5s program will be attending Kindergarten the following year.

Devotions

Each morning classes gather for a time of Devotions where children learn scripture and the Westminster Shorter Catechism through sign language and song.

Discovery

God’s creation is the subject of our Discovery Curriculum, incorporating Science, Humanities, and Bible. Our Discovery lessons are interactive and exploratory. Children explore creation through a variety of activities such as experiments, projects, and art, and learn to see God’s glory in all of it! Our 5s students study creation in context of the larger story: Creation, Fall, Redemption, and Consumation. They learn all about God’s greatest creation – man. 5s classes learn about the human body with lessons on all of our body systems, five senses, and how we are created to think and reason. We wrap up the 5s curriculum each year with a unit on the hope of Heaven. All 5s students and families participate in our capstone event: The Wedding Feast of the Lamb!

Language Arts

Mustard Seed offers a language rich environment crucial for language and literacy development. Hundreds of books are read each year. Language Arts in our 5s classes encompasses a variety of prereading and prewriting skills including, but not limited to, the recognition of letters and sounds, phonological and print awareness, early sentence structure, and story comprehension. We also incorporate activities to develop fine motor skills which are essential for reading and writing development. Children in our 5s classes work on correct pencil grip and scissors technique. They also learn and practice correct formation of letters and numbers. 5s students learn to write their name and recognize their address and telephone number.

El Pueblo

El Pueblo is our dramatic play area. Our schedule is designed to incorporate a balance between direct instruction and dramatic free play. El Pueblo houses fun, interactive areas like a grocery store, home living, restaurant, work bench, and puppet theater. Children participate in fun, rotating, interactive centers that coordinate with other curriculum areas. These include a space station, entomology lab, recording studio, vet center, and apple orchard.
